Guest Post: On Race Changes…

October 20, 2009

Greetings all! This is Derevka from Tales of a Priest. Yes I did close the doors at Tales, (mainly due to work being much more demanding of my time during the day, and our firewall at work now blocking blogger access) but I mentioned that I do miss blogging a bit, so Seri asked me to do a guest post here at Snarkcraft.

In the spirit of Snarkcraft, I really should try to make this post as snarky as possible. So I am going to discuss the in game feature that I am looking forward to the most. No, it is not killing Arthas and slapping that rather constipated expression right off his face… its Inter-Faction Race Changes.

This has been something I have been looking forward to for a long time. I know some people are rather upset by it because of the lore involved. How can you change your character’s RACE when you’ve been living and experiencing that race’s lore for 4+ years? To those I reply with, quite easily… you stare at the back of a female dwarf for 4 years and tell me that again. (I know I’ll be hated by the dorf lovers in this post… but I am shallow and like pretty things, so I’m looking forward to my visit to the plastic surgeon… a little snip here, a tuck there, an ‘augmentation’ over here…

I rolled a Female Dwarf Priest back in Vanilla for the sole reason of Fear Ward. The priest class back then, was the only class that had not only Racial Abilities but Race Based spells (Desperate Prayer, Fear Ward, Devouring Plague, LOLFeedback) Back in Vanilla you actually NEEDED Fear Ward on the Alliance side. You didn’t have Tremor Totems on Ally, and you needed fear protection for Ony, BWL, and MC.

Then enter Burning Crusade, and Space Goats were also given Fear Ward… but there weren’t many fights that had the opportunity to cast it. (Nightbane and Maulgar are the only 2 I can think of). Then Blizzard, in their infinite wisdom, decided to dole out Fear Ward to every priest. At that point, Vanilla WoW Dorf Priests looked around and /boggled.

Fast Forward to today, I’ve changed Gender to Male Dwarf because I simply couldn’t stand staring at “my humps my humps my humps….” anymore. I’ve been checking my Blue Tracker and even logging into the Account Management screen daily hoping to see the “Paid Race Change” to lose that taunting “Coming Soon” tag that is branded next to it. Hell, I’ve even clicked it a few times hoping it would somehow let me go through.

Some people view this as just another way for Blizzard to make money off of the player base. Just keep milking that dying cash cow. While I do tend to agree with them, I will happily spend that money in a heartbeat. It’ll be a change of pace… visually making the game look newer. No more having to rush to the front of a Guild Screenshot so I’m not completely blotted out by a Night Elf. No more twirling braids, or big bushy beards. No more oven mitt sized gloves. No more blow up doll facial expression when doing an Omni Cast. (look at a Female Dwarf spamming Inner Fire, and you’ll see it)  Soon I will have a Female Draenei ‘stretching magic’ casting animation… and not to mention a rather hoofed-yet-sexy physique to go along with it.

Why Draenei? Why not Human? Yes, for PVE Healing, Human is generally the Alliance best bet for Every Man For Himself, Faction Bonuses, and Human Spirit 3% spirit bonus. Mine is purely aesthetic, and the fact that my toon’s name is Derevka. (Which is a spin on the villainess family from the TV Series ALIAS – so having the Eastern European accent on my toon only seems fitting.) Now, if only the /dance animation was to “Single Ladies”…

  1. I’m looking forward to this, too, if only because I’ve always wanted a druid and can’t stand how gigantic Tauren are. So my current baby druid will soon be a sexy troll who can fit through the doors in Undercity while mounted—Yay!

    • Technically, Lil, your troll druid will require Cataclysm, since (much in the same way as tauren paladin or belf warrior) the race/class combination is not actually available until then.

The race changes they’re going to implement Soon ™ are the ones which will just allow available class/race combo -> available class/race combo.

      • Oh, I know that. I just mean in the “eventually” sense.

    • umm…my troll shammy gets stuck in undercity when mounted. even on her raptor (and lets not even mention bears…)

  2. I rolled Undead as a complete coincidence, but I have no desire to change. The temptation comes from alts, once again. I’m considering switching my druid to troll (eventually, as Jov and Lil pointed out), and… huh, that’s about it – I actually kinda like most of my race/class choices!

    • I’m still on the fence what I’m gonna do with Jov. On the one hand, I get… maybe not attached, but definitely accustomed, to my mains’ “look” and have a tough time thinking of them in any other way, that and my online presence is definitely a “crack elf”… On the other, I’ve always hated bloodelves, females especially (I rolled it for the mount and the starting zone) and love Trolls like… whoa.

So, this is Jov onna fence, wobbling one side to the other, unable to make up her mind.

      Joveta the blood elf?

      Jovvie the troll?

      • Trolls are awesome.

        Just sayin’…

  3. I personally can’t wait for this change to go live. The main reason my warlock is 80 and still in T5 shoulders and Badges of Justice boots and alike is simply because … she’s a gnome. No offense to gnomes, really, but dear Elune … What was I thinking?

Since getting her to 80 (took me like five months) she’s gotten like 100 emblems total and barely seen the light of day. She’s mainly been abused as a “brewfest bitch and hallow’s whore” for an extra reliable summon a day for my boyfriend.

  4. It’s so tempting to take my night elf hunter to the space goat side of things, just because night elves have always bugged me. I hate overlong ears, and WTF is with the eyebrows?!

But…she’s been that way so long! And she’s an established RP character despite her current existance on a PvP realm. Aaaack.

But but I love space goats!

  5. Love the Alias reference! Although Irina would be a rogue, not a priest given her skill at vanishing.

    • Lol.

Then you’d love my DK, Bristow; and my lock, Rambaldi.

      • Love!
Even though I’d see Sydney as a Paladin. Rambaldi is definitely a Warlock!

  6. I am very tempted to switch my spacegoat. Haven’t decided yet whether I actually will or not though. But … I hate her animations, I hate her laugh, I hate her dance … basically, she’s fine as long as she stands still and doesn’t talk.

But then I think, well … how often am I really going to play her? Is changing races going to make me actually take her off the shelf and give her playtime?

  7. The only change I want to make is to my Alt a Night Elf Druid. However I want to change her to Worgen and that will not even be allowed when the expansion comes out. I get to wait for an unspecified maybe someday… 😦

  8. I am looking to change my human warlock to Wargon, but I would like to see their spell animations first before changing. I would test the character from lvl 1 to maybe 10 as a warlock to see how it looks.

  9. Let me give you several examples: When you are sports fan you are united to that team. ,

  10. YAY! Online and live! GO GO SPACE GOAT!

  11. Derevka, nooo.. 😦 Don’t change your chara, it was awesome 😉

I also have a female dwarf priest and I don’t plan changing it… till Cataclysm. Cute gnome priests with that Int bonus for disc.. simply, lovely 😉

Spacegoats are too common, everywhere you look there it is, all horn-y though holy, at least people from pugs remember me, there’s too few dwarves out there 😛
